Pond Olive Mayfly

A while ago I was asked questions about Olives here on the blog, so finally thought I’d add something you might find useful for clarrification. The Pond Olive Mayfly (latin name Cloeon dipterum) is a common and abundant species. The nymphs can be found in a wide range of environments including quiet pools and margins …

Changable Weather

The weather is backwards and forwards at the moment, between heavy rain and cold winds and bright sun.  Yesterday we had lots of rain here in W. Yorkshire, however today looks like it will be dry and bright. I’m going to put the gear in the car and travel into Nidderdale for a few hours …

Fishing at last

Managed 3 or so hours late yesterday in Upper Nidderdale, however at the end I did wonder why!! The river was well up and the colour of very strong tea.  Flies everywhere including sedges, many cannis, a few olives and saw 2 yellow mays. But try as I may not a thing wanted my offerings. …

Sedges

I have spent the evening at the sailing club where my wife and daughter spend a lot of their time at being blown around the water.  Whilst there I walked around the lake, partly for exercise, partly to see if the carp anglers had anything (nothing reported) and also to see if any insects were about.  There …

Semperfli 6 finger scissors

Spent part of the day today tying more V-wing emergers with the Yellow nano silk and B-Bond bodies. I used the Sempergli 6 finger fly tying scissors through-out the sessions.  A really great set of scissors that fit comfortably into the hand and the over sized finger loop allows them to sit in the hand through-out …

What to do in all the wet

I know I’m waterproof, however after walking the dogs in the torrential rain this morning, the thoughts of fishing soon drifted away whilst enjoying breakfast and coffee.  What to do instead?  Ah, the tying room calls.  bit of a tidy up of materials after the last few weeks bumper sessions.  New materials filed away and then ………. …

Tenkara

I blogged a few days ago about experimenting with braid for nymphing…  If you have read the blog, you will have seen Duncan replied saying I should try Tenkara.  As it happens I’ve had some Tenkara gear on order for a while as this was something I had been discussing with one of my fishing …

Fishing today

The weather looks favourable this morning, even though there were dark skies to the north over the dales. Gear was packed into the car and I ventured up Nidderdale.  Standing by the roadside looking over the wall, the reservoir didn’t look quite so inviting with the wind and rain blowing along the water.  Casting might …
